Leonhard Euler

Leonhard Euler was a prolific Swiss mathematician and physicist who applied his expertise to problems in astronomy, optics, mechanical engineering and mechanics. He introduced some of the familiar notation still used in mathematics today, and expanded the reach of the infinitesimal calculus by introducing a great number of mathematical innovations. As a religious Christian, he was deeply interested in theology. He was also a family man and at his death was survived by 26 grandchildren.
