Edwin Hubble

Edwin Powell Hubble was one of the foremost astronomers in American history. His observations showed the existence of galaxies far beyond the Milky Way, and he found that these galaxies are moving away from one another. These observations lent support to the Big Bang theory of the origin of the universe. In addition, he formulated a system for classifying galaxies.
